Finalists of DenizBank ‘First Movie’ Competition are Announced

In the “First Movie” section of the “DenizBank First Scenario First Film Competition”, the fourth of which was organized this year in cooperation with TÜRSAK, 10 finalists were determined.

In collaboration with DenizBank and TÜRSAK Foundation, 10 movies that were finalized in the “First Movie” section of the 4th DenizBank First Scenario First Movie Competition, which aims to encourage the development of the Turkish cinema industry, the production of qualified cinema works and the young filmmakers making their first films within the year.

Among the films that made it to the finals, there are 2 films co-produced by TRT, including “Dilsiz” by Murat Pay and “Kapan” by Seyid Çolak.

In the contest where intense participation takes place; Abdurrahman Öner’s “Aydede”, Hakan Cigaoğlu’s “Bebek Geliyorum Demez”, Mustafa Karadeniz’s “Çınar”, Serhat Karaaslan’s “Görülmüştür”, Sefa Öztürk’s “Güven”, Çiğdem Bozali and Elif Akarsu Polat’s “Kader Postası”, Mustafa H. Öztürk’s “Kuklalı Köşk” and Zeynep Güzel’s “Yaz Kış Demeden” are also among the finalists.

Among the 10 films that made it to the finals, the WINNER of the competition will be determined by the main jury including the Chairman of the Fono Film Board, the founding partner of TAFF Pictures and the Vice President of the TÜRSAK Foundation, Cemal Okan, and the Vice President of CJ Entertainment Ferhat Aslan, Harika Uygur as the winner of the “European Cast Director” award from the Locarno Film Festival, a member of the International Cast Directors Association (ICDN) affiliated with European Film Promotion (EFP), Kanal D General Manager Murat Saygı and Bahçeşehir University Communication Faculty Cinema and Television Department Chair Prof. Dr. Nilay Ulusoy.

The Best First Film to be determined after the evaluation by the jury will be announced at the award ceremony and will receive the DenizBank Special Award worth 25.000 TL.

Films to Compete at the 70th Berlin Film Festival are Announced

The films that will compete at the 70th Berlin Film Festival between February 20 and March 1 have been announced.

Berlin Film Festival, one of the leading film festivals in Europe, is getting ready to meet with cinema lovers for the 70th time between February 20 and March 1 this year.

This year, Jeremy Irons, who is 71-year-old Oscar-winning film and theatre actor, will chair the festival. My Salinger Year directed by Philippe Falardeau, who is known for its Monsiuer,  Lazhar and starred by Sigourney Weaver and Margaret Qualley will open the 70th Berlin Film Festival.

The festival committee announced the films that will take place at the festival this year in a press release yesterday. Carlo Chatrian, who took the director of the festival over from Dieter Kosslick, said that the films they chose revealed “the dark side of the people”. In the introduction of the program, it was stated that if in the selected films “dark colors outweigh, the reason for this is not to spread fear, but to want people to open their eyes”. Chatrian emphasized that their only criteria when choosing films for the main competition was “artistic quality”.

British actress Helene Mirren was granted the Honorary Golden Bear award this year. A selection of the films played by Helene Mirren will be shown in the Hommage section.

 

No film from Turkey

No Turkish films will be featured this year at the Berlin Film Festival. In addition, Turkish films are not featured in other important parts of the festival such as Forum and Panorama.

Michael Stütz, director of the Panorama section, which includes examples from the world cinema, said that while they were preparing the program, they also went to Istanbul and watched many movies. Speaking to DW Turkish, Stütz mentioned that “it is a privilege and an advantage to see a significant section of this year’s films shot in Turkey in three days “. Stütz said that they had “discussed up to the last minute” for the inclusion of a few movies but they could not find the “right” movie to be included in the program.

TRT Co-Production “Uzun Zaman Önce” Returns from Dublin with an Award

“Long Time Ago”, written and directed by Cihan Sağlam, returned with an award from the 8th Silk Road International Film Festival, where it made his international premiere.

In the International Feature Film Competition of the film festival held in Dublin, the capital of Ireland, Onur Dikmen, the lead actor of “Long Time Ago”, has been granted the Award for Best Actor. “Long Time Ago”, which was also granted the “Best Actress” award in Boğaziçi Film Festival and “Best Supporting Actress” award in the International Adana Altın Koza Film Festival last year, is expected to release in Turkey in May 2020.

The Story of Losing Innocence

“Long Time Ago”, produced by Cenk Özçelik and Cihan Sağlam, is about two brothers who live in the shadow of their authoritarian father who has a quarry in an Anatolian town where they were born and raised and what happened after the murder they were accomplices. Starring Onur Dikmen, Orçin, Dengiz and Reha Özcan, the drama-thriller film tries to shed light on the roots of crime and penance, the dead ends of the father and son relationship, and the loveless history of relationships of women and men through the family institution and it tells the story of losing innocence based on the theme of “conscience”.

Applications to 12 Punto TRT Script Days has Started

Applications for 12 Punto TRT Script Days, organized by TRT and to be held for the second time this year, will be made between January 21 and March 12.

Special TRT Co-Production Prizewhich will be given for the first time this year, will be given to the new film project of Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

12 Punto TRT Script Days, which brought a new breath to the film industry, contributes to the development of the projects by supporting the filmmakers at the stage of the script and it also helps them find international co-producers by opening some space for festival circulation.

After the applications are completed, the pre-jury including independent and professional filmmakers will evaluate the projects and decide on 12 finalists.

The teams of the finalists will take courses from international trainers in the script development workshop and present their projects to the international jury including important figures of world cinema.

4 projects won the 12 Punto TRT Script Days Co-Production Prize and 4 projects won the 12 Punto TRT Script Days Prebuy Prize will be determined by the votes of the international jury.

The awards of the 8 winner projects will be given to the owners at the 12 Punto TRT Script Days closing ceremony.

Special TRT Co-Production Prize to Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s New Film Project

From this year, one of the masters of Turkish cinema will be given the “Special TRT Co-Production Prize”.

The first Special TRT Co-Production Prize will be given to Turkey’s one of the most important directors Nuri Bilge Ceylan for his new film project “Kuru Otlar Üstüne”.

12 Punto Exceeds Country Borders

12 Punto exceeds the borders of the country and it also supports international projects with Turkish partners. Starting this year, international projects with Turkish co-producers will be able to apply for 12 Punto.

Support for Short Films with 12 Point and TRT 2 Collaboration

Short film project applications will also be accepted for the first time this year at 12 Punto TRT Script Days. 12 of the short film projects in the script stage will be awarded the “TRT 2 Short Film Production Prize” by TRT 2. The winners of the award-winning short film projects will attend the scenario development workshops, , and they will be broadcast on TRT 2 after the shooting is completed.

Last year Oscar President was on TRT Jury

Last year, 119 feature film projects applied to 12 Punto.

The international jury, which was chaired by Oscar President John Bailey, and Marie-Pierre Vallé from Wild Bunch, one of the largest film distribution companies in the world, and Amra Bakšić Čamo, one of the Sarajevo Film Festival executives, awarded 4 projects out of 12 to theTRT Co-Production Prize4 of them to the TRT Preliminary Purchase Prize.

This year, the international jury of the 12 Punto TRT Script Days will feature important names of the world cinema, too.

2020 SAG Awards Found Their Owners

The 26th SAG Awards found their owners at a ceremony held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

“Parasite” in the field of cinema, “Crown” in the field of drama and in the field of comedy series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” received the “Best Cast” awards, Joaquin Phoenix with “Joker” and Laura Dern with “Marriage Story” won the “Best Actor/Actress Awards”. Preparations for Cappadocia Film Festival Has Started

Preparations for the first Cappadocia Film Festival, which is organized for the first time this year, has been started by Nevşehir Municipality.

According to the statement made by the festival management, the festival will bring together many outstanding films from world cinema and filmmakers with cinema lovers.

The festival, which aims to make Cappadocia, being an important tourism center of Turkey, one of the attraction centers of the cinema sector, will be held between  May 29 – June 3.

The mayor of Nevşehir, Rasim Arı stated that the Cappadocia Film Festival will contribute to the national cinema and expressed his sincere belief that the people of Nevsehir, who value culture and art, will show great interest in the festival.

Mr.Arı added that the festival, where they will share its details in a very short time, will be very suitable for Nevşehir and will have a special importance for art lovers, students, and tourists in the region.

Festival Director Suat Köçer stated that they started an intensive working process for the festival and evaluated that the festival will bring a new and strong breath to the Turkish cinema sector.

Köçer, pointing out that they are happy to bring the excitement of cinema to Cappadocia noticed that they will bring together outstanding films and valuable guests from all over Turkey and the world with cinema lovers from Nevşehir.

Jury President of 77th Venice Film Festival is Announced

Cate Blanchett will chair the Venice Film Festival that will be held on September 2-12.

Venice Film Festival Director Alberto Barbera announced that Cate Blanchett will be the president of the jury of the festival this year.

Blanchett will be at the head of the jury evaluating the films of the 77th Venice Film Festival and will choose who will receive the Golden Lion awards.

Cate Blanchett expressed her thoughts about the festival with the following words: “Every year I look expectantly to the selection at Venice and every year it is surprising and distinct. Venice is one of the most atmospheric film festivals in the world – a celebration of the provocative and inspirational medium that is cinema in all its forms. It is a privilege and a pleasure to be this year’s jury president.”

Lucrecia Martel, Argentinian director of “Zama”, chaired the Venice Film Festival last year. Also, the Joker, which has been nominated for the Academy this year, won the Best Film award.
