SYNOPSIS

Defne (26), a Turkish expat in France, is expelled from her PhD in fine-arts restoration, after having a fight with her professor. With her student visa expiring and without a job opportunity on the horizon, she moves back to Istanbul, leaving her life and her boyfriend behind. Back in Istanbul, her old friends have moved on with their lives. She can’t get along with her mother and her grandpa is diagnosed with cancer. She crashes on her high-school friend Eda’s couch for a while. Yet with her job search in France going nowhere, Defne loses her hope of returning and breaks up with her boyfriend. She apologizes to her mother and moves back into her childhood room to start from scratch. She lands a job at a local museum as a painting-restorer. She gets really good at it and even swallows her pride to succeed, asking her old professor for help with a difficult restoration. Having her work-life stabilized also helps Defne to reconnect with her mother. Despite now having a flat of her own and a job, Defne doesn’t seem satisfied with her life finally on track. Her grandfather’s deteriorating situation, plus Eda’s shifting attention to her new boyfriend makes her feel lonely all over again. Finally, when her hard-work is snubbed by her boss, she loses her last bit of inspiration that kept her going in this rumbling city. After her grandfather’s death, she accepts the invitation of her old professor to continue her studies abroad, who was impressed by the work, for which Defne had asked for her help. Defne leaves Istanbul, this time for good.
